Assistant Teacher Job Description

The Chilmark Preschool supports a team teaching model. Teachers are hired based on their experience, education, responsibility, accountability, enthusiasm, integrity, initiative, maturity, the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and leadership. All Teachers report to the Program Director.

Teaching Assistant Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent 

  • EEC Strong Start Essentials 12 hr Course (free)

  • Teachers must meet the CORI, DCF, SORI, NSOR, BRC and finger printing investigation requirements.

  • CPR and First Aid Certification

  • Be nurturing and responsive and treat children and families with respect.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practice of early childhood education.

  • Be sensitive to the needs of individual children and families.

  • Perform the physical duties involved in the care of young children and their environment including supervision of the classroom and playground, the ability to lift and carry children, take them on walks and keep their environment safe and appropriately clean and conducive to learning.

  • All teachers must complete the required 20 hours of professional development training annually (expenses covered by CPS).

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that children are supervised at all times by a qualified teacher. This includes during indoor and outdoor play, nap/rest times and bathroom use.

  • Working together with Co-Teacher(s), other team members and the Director to assure the smooth running of the day-to-day program, the children’s safety, physical and emotional well-being and educational growth.

  • Participating actively in weekly team and planning time to design learning opportunities and curriculum.

  • Communicating with team members, ensuring that the program meets children’s needs in all developmental areas.

  • Participating with other team members either welcoming calls or classroom visits in the fall for each family.

  • All teaching staff members are expected to support along side of the board, the PAC in their fundraising efforts and attend Parent/Teacher Conferences and all other CPS community events.
